Cyprus Wonders After… · October 30, 2012
Demetris Christofias, President of Cyprus and Pope Benedict XVI met at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. The visit, according to a Vatican communiqué, said that the two men cordially discussed the good relations between the Vatican and Cyprus. They also discussed respect for human rights and the right to freedom of religion.
As usual, following such papal audiences, Christofias met with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.
The Republic of Cyprus currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union; hence the meeting took additional significance as the papal leaders discussed the current problems facing Europe. The Vatican wants to influence the direction of the European Union; therefore this would have been an important opportunity to encourage initiatives that would benefit papal recovery of its role as the moral and authoritative voice in Europe. They also discussed the situation in the Middle East.
